Sisters Finding Refuge After Losing Everything

Before the war, Olena Fedoriaka built a life for herself as a private entrepreneur in the food service industry, proudly owning her own home in Bakhmut. Her elder sister, Valentyna, lived separately in a one-room apartment. The war shattered everything they had spent a lifetime building.

As the fighting intensified, the sisters fled to safety and were initially placed in a modular town in Obukhiv. There, they completed an application for housing through the Hansen initiative — a decision that would change their lives. They were fortunate enough to be accepted into Miracle Village, a turn of events for which they remain profoundly grateful.

Both sisters’ homes in Bakhmut were destroyed during the intense battle for the city, leaving them with nothing to return to.

“Our lives have changed tremendously for the better; joy fills our souls, ” shares Olena. “The living conditions are very good and comfortable. After medical examinations and work with a psychologist, our physical and mental health have improved. My sister and I are very thankful for everything that has been done and continues to be done for us.”

In their new community, Olena found purpose by volunteering with the garden group, tending to plants and helping maintain the community’s green spaces. Meanwhile, Valentyna, who is disabled and requires assistance, has found the safety and care she needs.

For these two sisters, Miracle Village has become more than just a place to live — it has become a sanctuary of dignity and belonging after losing everything to war.
