From Occupation to Renewal
From March through November 2022, the Kovalchuk family endured life under Russian occupation in Beryslav. Stores closed, the gas pipeline was blown up, and electricity and water disappeared. “We collected rainwater,” recalls Mariia, describing their struggle to survive. Destruction was widespread throughout their city.
In November, Ukrainian forces liberated them from occupation, but safety did not return — Russian forces began dropping bombs on the city. Volunteers helped them evacuate and settled them in a modular town in Brovary. Eventually, they applied for housing in Miracle Village and were accepted. Their home in Beryslav was partially destroyed during the occupation and subsequent fighting.
“We live harmoniously here with good neighbors, and we have our own small garden,” Mariia shares. “We planted marigolds, which smell like home, and vegetables. We’re grateful to the psychologists who helped us during this difficult time to return to living. We live comfortably and with dignity.”
Despite their advanced age, both spouses continue to contribute to their new community — Oleksii assists with village security, while Mariia volunteers in the dining hall. After enduring occupation and the trauma of air strikes, this elderly couple has found not only safety but purpose and community in their new surroundings.
