From Destruction to Community

The Orel family lived comfortably in the city of Bakhmut until war upended their lives. Their house was completely destroyed and their city occupied, forcing them to become displaced persons in September 2022. They initially found refuge in a modular town in Brovary near Kyiv, before relocating to Miracle Village in Kolonshchyna in October.

Their home in Bakhmut was destroyed during the fierce battle for the city, leaving nothing for them to return to after decades of building their lives there.

“Thanks to the charitable foundation, village leadership, and volunteers, we’ve received tremendous psychological support and felt and continue to feel respect and caring treatment toward us,” shares Iryna. “We’re all waiting for victory and a return to normal life.”

Both spouses have found purpose in their new community. Yuriy volunteers with the fire safety group, while Iryna assists with education and community events. “We perform manageable tasks to help the village function,” they explain, finding dignity in contributing to their new community despite the trauma of losing their home and city to the war.
