From Village to Refuge: An Agronomist’s Second Chance

Anatoliy and Larysa Rybalko evacuated from their village of Berestove on April 1, 2022, seeking safety in Pyriatyn, Poltava region. There, they rented housing until June 2023, when they relocated to the “Slava” sanatorium in Myrhorod. In the fall, they submitted an application to the Hansen foundation. Their request was approved, and in early January 2024, they settled in Miracle Village.

Their house in Berestove was destroyed during the fighting, leaving nothing for them to return to after decades of village life.

“Our lives have changed dramatically,” shares Larysa. “We received a small house with all modern conveniences. My husband has the opportunity to engage in his favorite work. We receive comprehensive support, for which we are sincerely grateful to everyone involved.”

Both spouses have found meaningful roles that utilize their skills in their new community. Anatoliy, a professional agronomist, leads the garden volunteer group, while Larysa helps prepare meals in the dining hall for the village residents. After losing their rural home, they have found not only safety but also purpose by contributing their agricultural and culinary expertise to benefit their new community.
