Shmarov Family

From: Chasiv Yar, Donetsk region
Family members: Serhiy (72) and Halyna (72)

A Peaceful Haven After Destruction

The Shmarov family once enjoyed life in the beautiful, picturesque city of Chasiv Yar. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and amid constant shelling and bombardment of their city, Serhiy and Halyna, both 72 years old, were forced to abandon their home. The volunteer group “Vostok SOS” evacuated them to Vasylkiv in the Kyiv region, where they found temporary shelter in a modular town built by Polish aid organizations.

While staying in Vasylkiv, they were offered the opportunity to apply for more permanent housing. Their application was approved, and they were provided with a small house in Kolonshchyna village in Miracle Village, built with funds from philanthropist Dell Loy Hansen. The couple’s original home in Chasiv Yar was completely destroyed during the fighting, leaving them with nothing to return to.

“Everything in our lives has changed for the better,” shares Halyna. “We are simply happy to be living among good people, and our life has become stable and peaceful again.”

Both spouses have found purpose in their new community. Serhiy has joined the volunteer fire safety group, while Halyna volunteers with the team that provides support to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to their new community and country despite the trauma they’ve endured.
