Finding Safety After Occupation

The Sholkovy family endured the harsh realities of war in their village of Yampil, Donetsk region. After surviving five months under occupation, Liudmyla was forced to travel to Bila Tserkva on October 1, 2022, for urgent medical treatment. Without access to insulin during this difficult period, she tragically lost her vision.

In January 2023, disaster struck when a direct hit destroyed their home. Mykola evacuated with his 88-year-old mother Hanna and their beloved dog, fleeing the dangerous conditions. The family remained separated by circumstances until October 20, 2023, when they were finally reunited as they moved into Miracle Village.

“Thanks to the free accommodation, we’ve been able to afford the medications we desperately need,” Liudmyla shares. “The nightmares about our time under occupation are becoming less frequent. We feel more protected now and have regained hope for the future, which gives us confidence. We are immensely grateful to our benefactor, Mr. Dell Loy Hansen.”

Both spouses have found ways to contribute to their new community. Liudmyla works as a volunteer dispatcher, scheduling transportation for residents to hospitals, markets, and cultural events. Mykola serves as a volunteer with the Fire Safety group, helping to protect their newfound sanctuary after losing everything to the war.
