A Journey Marked by Resilience and Hope

Mykola Shulzhenko’s life changed dramatically when war came to his home in Myronivskyi, a small settlement in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region. On April 29, 2022, as the conflict intensified, Mykola evacuated with his elderly mother Hanna and his wife to Myrhorod in the Poltava region, seeking safety from the constant shelling.

The family’s journey was marked by both tragedy and resilience. In November 2023, Mykola’s wife passed away, leaving him as the sole caretaker for his 97-year-old mother. Despite this devastating loss, Mykola continued to search for a safe place where they could rebuild their lives.

A New Beginning

On January 10, 2024, a new chapter began when Mykola and Hanna moved to the Miracle Town charitable housing project. When asked about his original home, Mykola simply says:

“I have no information.”

The uncertainty about whether their house still stands reflects the harsh reality faced by many displaced Ukrainians.

Finding Peace and Purpose

“Living in Miracle Town has transformed our lives, ” Mykola shares. “We no longer hear the sounds of explosions or shells flying overhead. The administration and staff treat residents with genuine care and compassion. The living conditions are comfortable and dignified.”

Finding purpose in his new community, Mykola now volunteers with the electrician team, putting his professional skills to work helping others in the settlement. After months of displacement and loss, mother and son have finally found a place where they can live in peace, surrounded by support as they rebuild their lives.
