Finding Community After Losing Home
After being evacuated from Bakhmut, the Tkachenko family traveled throughout Ukraine seeking refuge before finally arriving in Kolonshchyna at Miracle Village. “We’re here thanks to Mr. Hansen, who has such a sincere, big heart,” shares Liudmyla with gratitude.
Their home in Bakhmut was destroyed during the fierce battle for the city, leaving them with nothing to return to after decades of building their lives there.
“Thanks to such care, we feel comfortable here, although memories of our city still trouble us,” Volodymyr explains, reflecting the mixed emotions many displaced seniors experience — gratitude for safety, yet mourning for all they’ve lost.
“In Miracle Village, we’ve made new friends, despite our poor health,” continues Liudmyla. “We wanted to provide whatever help we could to our community.”
Despite their advanced age and health challenges, both spouses have found ways to contribute to their new community as volunteers — Volodymyr assists with security, while Liudmyla helps in the dining hall. This opportunity to remain useful and connected with others has provided purpose and dignity during a deeply challenging time in their lives.
