Finding Permanent Safety After Years of Displacement
Liubov Shashyna’s long journey began back in 2014, when she was first evacuated from her hometown of Horlivka to Bakhmut in Donetsk region. As the conflict escalated, she was forced to flee again in May 2022, this time to Dnipro. There, she moved between three different shelters as they closed one after another, facing constant uncertainty about where she would live next.
The years of conflict, displacement, and constant stress have taken a severe toll on Liubov’s health, resulting in serious illnesses. Throughout this difficult period, she underwent treatments and surgeries, which she continues to this day. In a stroke of good fortune, fellow displaced persons advised her to register on a website for housing assistance, which eventually led her to Miracle Village.
When asked about her original home, Liubov simply says, “Nothing is known” — reflecting the reality of many older displaced Ukrainians who have lost contact with their hometown and property after years of conflict.
“My new life began here,” Liubov shares with emotion. “In a new place, starting from the New Year, in a new home. I feel happy, peaceful, and comfortable here. And this is thanks to God and a person with a big heart, Dell Loy Hansen. Now this is my home forever. I sincerely thank everyone.”
At 74 years old and dealing with health challenges, Liubov has finally found the stability and safety that had eluded her for nearly a decade of displacement. Now, she can focus on her health and well-being rather than worrying about where she will sleep next.
