Finding Home After Wandering
At the beginning of the war, Maiia Kurovska lived in Bakhmut. As the situation deteriorated, she evacuated to Irpin, where she initially stayed in a rented apartment before moving to the city’s modular town for displaced persons.
In July 2023, representatives from the “With Love to Ukraine” foundation visited and presented housing projects to the residents. Maiia agreed to live in Miracle Village in Kolonshchyna. On January 2, 2024, she relocated there and has been living there since. Her home in Bakhmut was destroyed during the fierce battle for the city, leaving nothing for her to return to.
“I’m very satisfied,” Maiia shares. “After all the hardships and wandering through others' homes, I feel almost like I’m at home again. Great thanks to Mr. Hansen for his kind heart, for responding to our misfortune and building such comfortable accommodations for residents. I bow low to YOU!”
Despite her advanced age, Maiia contributes to her new community as a volunteer, helping with the “Support for the Armed Forces of Ukraine” group. After experiencing displacement and the loss of her home, she has found not only safety but also purpose and community that have restored her sense of belonging and dignity.
