Finding Refuge After Industrial Shelter
Nadiia Skydan remained in her apartment for some time after the invasion began, despite having no electricity or heat since March 2022. Following advice from acquaintances, she eventually sought safety in one of the shelters at the Azot chemical plant, one of the oldest enterprises in her city and a site that would later become known for sheltering hundreds of civilians during intense fighting.
Later, volunteers helped her evacuate from the city, first to Sloviansk and then to Lozova station. From there, she took an evacuation train to Lviv and stayed with friends in Chervonohrad, Lviv region. Learning about American philanthropists through the internet, Nadiia submitted an application. “Imagine my joy when I received an invitation to Miracle Village,” she shares. “I am sincerely grateful to Hansen.”
Unlike many others, Nadiia’s apartment has so far been preserved, though it remains in a contested area with an uncertain future.
“For me, life here has changed for the better,” Nadiia explains. “I have access to qualified medical assistance, psychological support, and sports activities like Nordic walking.”
Finding purpose in her new community, Nadiia engages in volunteer work with the “Education and Events” group, helping to organize activities that build community and provide learning opportunities for fellow residents. After the trauma of seeking shelter in an industrial facility and multiple relocations, she has found stability and purpose in her new surroundings.
