A Haven in the Twilight Years

Olena Bilykova, a 72-year-old retired geologist from Bakhmut, had weathered many storms in her life. Born in the village of Serebryanka, she had found purpose in her work at Donetskgeologiya, overseeing geological surveys and coal exploration projects. But when war came to her homeland, Olena’s world was turned upside down.

Trapped in Bakhmut as she cared for her ailing father, Olena watched helplessly as the news of the conflict took its toll, ultimately claiming her father’s life. With a heavy heart, she fled the city, leaving behind the home she had cherished for so long.

Olena’s journey to safety was fraught with danger, the constant presence of fighter jets overhead a harrowing reminder of the war that raged around her. As she sought refuge in various cities, the financial strain and emotional toll of constant upheaval weighed heavily upon her.

It was in the midst of this turmoil that Olena discovered Senior Chudo Village. With tears in her eyes, she recounts the moment she received the call informing her that she had been accepted into this haven for displaced elderly individuals.

As she stepped into apartment 13.2A on December 19, 2024, Olena was overwhelmed by the sense of peace and comfort that enveloped her. Despite the challenges she faced, including visual impairment and a third-degree disability, Olena’s resilience shone through.

In Senior Chudo Village, Olena found not only a stable home but also a community that understood her struggles and celebrated her strength. She marveled at the mission of Dell Loy Hansen, whose projects, like “Miracle Town” in Kolonshchyna, provided hope to those who had lost everything.

As she reflected on her life and the wisdom she had gained, Olena urged the younger generation to fight for their country, to preserve their humanity, and to support one another in times of adversity. And though she wished she could contribute more physically to her new community, she expressed her willingness to help financially, grateful for the haven that had been created for those like her.

In the twilight of her years, Olena Bilykova had found a sanctuary in Senior Chudo Village, a place where she could live out her days in peace, surrounded by the warmth and love of a community that had become her family.
