From Occupation to New Purpose
Before the war, Petro Pika lived alone in Polohy, enjoying a normal, peaceful life. Within days, the war engulfed his city and home. The occupiers quickly destroyed the city and damaged his house. Petro remained under occupation until April 7, 2022, when friends helped him evacuate to Zaporizhzhia. He later relocated to Kyiv, where he rented a room.
With the help of kind, caring people, Petro completed an application for housing assistance and, about a month later, received an invitation to Miracle Village. His home in Polohy remains damaged and under occupation, with an uncertain future.
“My life in Miracle Village has changed for the better,” Petro shares. “Thanks to volunteers, psychology sessions, and cultural activities, I’ve found a sense of purpose again, along with peace and comfort. It’s very beautiful around here; I commune with nature and good people. Thank you very much for everything.”
Finding purpose in his new community, Petro volunteers with the fire safety group, helping to protect the village that has given him a new beginning after experiencing the trauma of occupation and forced displacement.
