Rising From the Flood Waters

When the war began, the Fedorenko family found themselves living under occupation in Hola Prystan, Kherson region. Their situation took a catastrophic turn in June 2022 when Russian forces destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, causing massive flooding in the region. As water engulfed buildings, the family was rescued from their rooftop, forced to leave behind everything they owned.

They were evacuated to Brovary, where they were provided housing in a modular town for displaced persons. In August 2023, they completed an application for more permanent housing, and on October 20, they moved into their new home in what they describe as a “fairy-tale village.”

Their original home was completely destroyed by the flooding, leaving nothing to salvage or return to.

“We are very satisfied with our life in Miracle Village,” shares Raisa. “We have comfortable living conditions. We are regularly visited by medical professionals, psychologists, and legal advisors. We live in harmony with our neighbors. We finally live in peace and comfort. We are grateful to those who took care of us elderly people.”

The couple has found stability and community in their new home, providing them with the security and dignity they need in their senior years, especially as they remain connected with their daughter Iryna, who serves in the military and continues to defend Ukraine.
