From Flight to Community

On April 9, 2022, during the evacuation of civilians from Bakhmut, the Kurazhnov couple was transported by volunteers to Bila Tserkva. There, acquaintances helped them find rental housing before they eventually relocated to Miracle Village. Their home in Bakhmut was completely destroyed during the fierce battle for the city, leaving nothing for them to return to after decades of building their lives there.

“Our lives have changed 100%,” shares Nina. “Our family has felt support from the staff and organizers. We’ve gained the opportunity to live in good conditions, among kind people. We spend our time in interesting ways. The garden and new friends allow us to forget what we’ve been through and move forward.”

Both spouses contribute to their new community as volunteers with the Security group, where they distribute bicycles to residents and take turns watering the lawn. After experiencing the trauma of forced evacuation and the complete destruction of their home, they have found not only safety but also purpose and community that have helped them rebuild their lives.
