Finding Dignity For a Disabled Father

In May 2022, the Levchenko family was forced to evacuate from their village to Lviv region in western Ukraine. There, they lived in an abandoned small house without proper amenities — relying on wood stove heating and having no running water. The situation was especially difficult as Yurii is disabled with limited mobility, making their living conditions particularly challenging.

Their home in Novoluhanske was destroyed during the fighting, leaving nothing for them to return to after decades of village life.

“Our life has changed dramatically for the better,” shares Halyna about their move to Miracle Village. “There are comfortable living conditions, feelings of protection, dignity, and safety. There’s also the sense that you’re not alone with your grief and problems, not unwanted in this world.”

The Levchenko family represents the reality of many Ukrainian families divided by war — with one son remaining with his parents to care for his disabled father, while another son serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, defending the country. Finding safe, accessible housing has been especially crucial for this family given Yurii’s mobility challenges, allowing them all peace of mind as they navigate this difficult chapter in their lives.
