From Feeding Soldiers to Finding Sanctuary
At the beginning of the war, 82-year-old Halyna Postoieva remained in Bakhmut, where she worked in a canteen serving Ukrainian soldiers. After half a year, the canteen was bombed, and volunteers evacuated her to Brovary, where she lived in a modular town until the “Hansen Ukrainian Mission” charitable foundation invited her to live in Miracle Village.
Her home in Bakhmut was destroyed during the fierce battle for the city, leaving nothing for her to return to after decades of building her life there.
“Living in Miracle Village is very comfortable,” Halyna shares with gratitude. “Thanks to the incredible kindness and generosity of Mr. Hansen, we receive comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal assistance here. I get positive emotions from communicating with people and feel the caring attention of the administration. This gives me strength and brings joy.”
Despite her advanced age, Halyna continues to contribute to her community as a volunteer, showing remarkable resilience after losing her home and workplace to the war. Her story exemplifies how even the oldest displaced Ukrainians can find new purpose and community after experiencing profound loss and trauma.
