From Language Teacher to Village Librarian

In March 2022, Valentyna Molchan was forced to evacuate from Sievierodonetsk as the situation in the city became extremely dangerous. Intense shelling and bombardment claimed many lives, compelling her to flee for safety. She found refuge in Kolomyia, Ivano-Frankivsk region, where kind people provided her with housing and everything necessary.

A year later, Valentyna learned about Miracle Village, submitted an application, and received the opportunity to live there. On October 20, along with other displaced persons, she moved into what she describes as a truly “Miracle Village.” She has no information about the current state of her home in Sievierodonetsk, which remains in a contested area.

“I arrived at Miracle Village in a depressed state, worried about how life would unfold in a new place, ” Valentyna admits. “But I worried needlessly. Life has changed for the better; the village moved me to tears with both its beauty and comfort. We’re doing well here; we’ve finally found peace and coziness. I’m very grateful to Dell Loy Hansen for everything. And I will never forget his kindness, generosity, and humanity.”

Finding purpose that connects to her professional background, Valentyna now serves as the village librarian, a role she greatly enjoys given her background as a Ukrainian language teacher. After losing her home and profession to the war, she has found not only safety but also meaningful work that utilizes her skills and provides a valuable service to her new community.
